Hit black on the way to green.
July 12, 2008
Hi,
Recently I found this page called black google, which is a black version of google.So whats special?
Not long ago a few bloggers and web designers understood that a black version of a website saves power. How? Apparently the colour white needs more energy to be displayed on CRT monitors, compared to black (on LCD too, but the difference is negligible here). This became a bit popular after a treehugger put it on his blog (now you know why my blog is black
)
Another fact? Not just black, but variants of some other colours too help reduce the energy consumed (compared to an all white website). Cool huh?
The only thing is I am not sure if the black google link I provided earlier is a legitimate version of google, or someone just made it up. I would suggest not logging in till you know, and if you do know please tell me
Another option is the Heap Media site Blackle, which claims to have saved 713,828.250 Watt hours (when I made this post)
When I searched for black versions of google (on the real google
) I found this other blog saying that the Chinese versions of many sites (Microsoft, Sony, Google etc.) went black as a sign of mourning the recent earth-quake in China.
As far as I know the only one time google went black was on earthhour this year, with a caption that said “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn – Earth Hour”.
So if your wondering why google is not black yet, check out this link. A clarification on the google blog here.
Keep it cool
